How would we ever find another partner that would understand our affection for braised (and sometimes fried) pork?

Thanks to Taste of Home we now have the perfect recipe for Pork Carnitas to make at home. And there's a bonus - they are made in a Slow Cooker!

You have to be signed in to Taste of Home to see this recipe, but it's free to join.

The chicken broth, green chiles and salsa add the perfect amount of moisture to the meat. I left out the oil, made 1/2 the recipe and cooked my roast on low for 6 hours. It was perfect! I served the carnitas with homemade tortillas, beans, rice, avocado slices, cilantro & onions.

Click Here for the recipe. Seneca Wichita, Kansas

Venezuelan & Mexican Food. No Tacos, No Nachos.

DELICIOUS sums up this experience in one word. We haven't been eating out much (boo to that, but yea for losing weight and saving money) and today was the day I couldn't take another home cooked, healthy meal. I wanted to eat some Mexican food - and it had to be a place where I would take one bite and swoon. I found that experience at Taco Nacho.

We had to laugh because they don't have nachos (thank goodness) or tacos - but they do have Mariachi's - not a band - but a corn tortilla on a plate with meat on top. Sounds to me like you could fold that over and have a taco, but they owner said they do not have tacos. They do have tamales - both Mexican & Venezuelan - with or without gravy.

My Arepa was absolutely one of the best things I have ever eaten. The "corn fritter" was crispy on the outside and creamy softness inside. It was filled with refried beans, shredded pork in a light gravy and cheese. The only thing that could have made it better, would have been cilantro and onions, which I asked for but didn't get.

The Loose Plate that Doug had was Pork in red chile (Rojo), beans and rice. Not too hot - mine was spicier, but still a fantastic combination of flavors. He's not a bean lover, and didn't finish these either, but he thought they were pretty good.

The specials board touted Empanadas, Albondigas, Pabellon and other varieties of Arepas, and fried Plantains, all of which I am anxious to try. Too bad these things aren't listed in my Weight Watchers points book, and they are only open 8:00 - 3:00 Monday - Saturday. BAD NEWS - TACO NACHO CLOSED 2/11/11. So, when I saw the recipe for Southwestern Turkey with Spicy Gravy on Recipe Lion's website, I knew I had to try it. How do you wonderful bloggers take care of your home and family, have hobbies and maintain a beautiful blog complete with photos, recipes, giveaways, etc. There are just not enough hours in the day for me and I only sleep 5-6 hours at night.

We have been trying to save $$$ and the first thing we cut out was eating out. That was the ultimate sacrifice for me. While I love to cook, I love eating out more - no clean up, you know.

We did make it to La Hacienda on North Broadway in Wichita on Saturday afternoon. No photos - we had Foxy & Lucy with us and those dogs love tacos. We had to hurry and eat before they grabbed our food. Too cold to eat at the picnic table outside. Doug had tacos - barbacoa and al pastor. I had the Burrito al Pastor which was incredible.

One of these days, I'll get organized and learn how to blog like a pro and will have a million followers. I'm such a dreamer.susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-31986859548723335222010-09-30T10:14:00.000-05:002010-09-30T10:14:39.562-05:00True Nut Company Maple Roasted Almond Sampler {Giveaway} ~ 3 WinnersTrue Nut Company Maple Roasted Almond Sampler {Giveaway} ~ 3 Winnerssusitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-70954556565369673792010-08-30T23:53:00.000-05:002010-08-30T23:53:00.422-05:00Wichita Coupons: One Dozen Cup Cake Pops Giveaway!Wichita Coupons: One Dozen Cup Cake Pops Giveaway!: "Jodie at Sweet Treats by Jodie is offering up one lucky reader a dozen Cup Cake Pops. I would eat it for every meal if I could. Last night we tried a month old restaurant on South Hillside called Tienda Rochell. Their menu consists of the standard tacos, burritos, chile rellenos, tortas, sopes and gorditas.

But they also have some special items like Chile Verde, Chile Rojo, and WHOLE FRIED FISH (my favorite).

Sadly, I forgot my camera, but we will be eating there often and I will have pictures next time. Finally a good Mexican restaurant nearby. I'll still be driving to North Wichita for my favorites, like Garcia's, Mr. Taco and 21st Street Burgers (Yes, it's a Mexican restaurant that serves burgers - probably just so they wouldn't have to buy a new sign).susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-79858733138975599962010-06-17T20:49:00.001-05:002010-08-05T10:01:40.922-05:00I LOVE CSN STORESImagine my surprise when I got an email from Eileen at CSN today telling me she would like to help me promote my blog and CSN by conducting a giveaway of a kitchen or home decor item.

My blog is horrible! I have no idea what I'm doing, I need "Blogging for Dummies" or a tutor. I would love to have a sweet layout with a Mexican Food background - but where do you find that? And I want a blog roll, and I want to know how to blog about someone's giveaway.

I am going to take some photos of my beautiful antique Mexican dishware and post some of those this weekend, if I can figure it out. And hope we aren't too busy dealing with teenage angst or doing yardwork that we can go out to eat some of the Mexican food we are MAD for and I can review it and post some pictures. We haven't been to Garcia's in Wichita for a while, and that is where I had my first taste of Mexican food outside of Mexico, thanks to my dear friend Melissa.

Next weekend is my youngest nephew's wedding so I'll be seeing my niece, Stephanie, who has a blog. Maybe she can help me out and one day soon, this will look like a REAL blog.susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-15292692000297426832010-06-15T21:59:00.001-05:002010-06-15T21:59:57.213-05:00

Love her blog and I wanted to post her cute new button for her. I am finally getting a camera and will be updating my blog with photos of the glorious Mexican food that we love. And maybe even some pics of my awesome Mexican theme dishware collection. Time to get this blog cooking!susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-32888280985134339742009-04-11T22:30:00.001-05:002009-04-11T22:40:00.385-05:00Mr. TacoTacos Carnitas with Cilantro & Onion with just a spritz of juice from a fresh lime. Does it get any better than this? Well, food wise...NO - these were the most delicious tacos I have ever eaten and believe me, I have eaten some pretty fantastic tacos.

Mr. Taco is at 25th and Arkansas and is just this side of shady. They grill their meat on a "well seasoned" grill just out back of the building. There is no place to eat inside and if you get more than 3 people in the ordering area, a major case of claustrophobia sets in. They do have several concrete tables and plastic chairs outside, and we've eaten out there before, but today was too chilly.

So, we ate in the car and all the while, Foxy kept trying to jump in the front seat to eat our food. The only problem now is how to get the cilantro smell out of my car!

Doug had Carnitas too, but he got his in burrito form. I told him he must have been channeling Adam Richman from Man vs. Food because that was one bulging burrito! Carnitas, beans, rice, lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, onion, cilantro and some of the hottest sauce to ever burn his lips. He didn't get hungry again for EIGHT HOURS, so that should tell you something, if you know Doug!

They also sell carnitas by the pound on weekends.

Along with carnitas, they have carne asada, pollo, chiccarones (not on the printed menu) and al pastor for tacos, burritos and tostadas.

Totally delicious and I can't wait for our next trip back to Mr. Taco.susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-38340159237324220862009-02-01T17:43:00.000-06:002009-02-01T17:50:48.369-06:00Yummy Mexican Food Last NightWe went to our current favorite spot - 21st Street Burgers in Wichita. It's on 21st, between Broadway and Arkansas. It's a Mexican place, really. But they do serve burgers and fries.

I forgot to take pictures of our food, but plan to do that in the future.

Doug had the most delicious Mexican Fajitas - with carne asada, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. Served with Rice, Beans, Corn Tortillas. On a scale of 1 to 10, he said they were a 10 PLUS!

Me - One Taco Al Pastor and One Chicken Gordita. Since I can't eat lettuce, I got them both with cilantro and onions. The taco was great, the chicken so-so. I like my gorditas with a little bit of refried beans and sour cream, but this one was just chicken, cilantro and onions. Kind of bland. Put some hot sauce on it and that perked it up considerably!susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892711570479339290.post-3770582315152314192009-01-25T20:07:00.000-06:002009-01-25T20:10:32.518-06:00We should live in Mexico. To our family, there is nothing better than authentic Mexican Food.

I don't even bother to try to make it at home, there is NO WAY I could do it as well as any of the gazillion places in Wichita that make real Mexican Food.

Suadero Huaraches, Milanesa Torta, Charro Beans with Steak, Chorizo con Huevos, Alhambre Tacos.

Pictures and restaurant reviews coming soon!susitravlhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16557690385843527423noreply@blogger.com1
